New Academy

The New Academy is a society for Lower Sixth scholars and Oxbridge candidates.

Plato’s original Academy opened in Athens in 387 BC and sought to challenge and stretch the minds of its pupils.

The New Academy, a society for Lower Sixth scholars and Oxbridge candidates, has similar aspirations: to encourage pupils to question current thinking and received wisdom. Through a series of pupil-driven workshops and debates, New Academicians learn how to make effective presentations, practise thinking more logically and creatively, and develop their communication skills. Topics covered have included 'What is the point of education?'; 'Is adversity an essential component in the production of great art?';  'How do I know that I exist?' and 'Does the punishment fit the crime?'.

As the year progresses, members are instructed on research techniques and are encouraged to research areas of personal interest in order to deepen their knowledge in preparation for a potential Extended Project.

Members also enjoy general knowledge quizzes and what are often fiery debates on current affairs. Other activities, such as the scholars' trip in the Lent term, the Headmaster's brain games evening, the annual scholars' dinner and pro-drama and pro-music events at the College are held in conjunction with the Hayman or Casson Societies.

Membership of the New Academy in the Lower Sixth is automatic for former members of the Hayman Society and new sixth form academic scholars and exhibitioners. Others for whom it would be considered beneficial will be invited to attend by the Assistant Head (Teaching and Learning).
