“Music is the universal language of mankind - Longfellow”

Music

Music is studied by all pupils in Year 9, and is an option at GCSE, AS and A level.

The Music Department supports its academic teaching by means of three well-equipped classrooms, two suites of ten Apple Macs, a department library of books, scores and CDs and a dedicated music technology department. Four full-time staff with a broad range of specialisms teach at all levels of the curriculum, supported by a technician.

All pupils study Music in Year 9, focussing on their listening and composing skills and gaining an introduction to Sibelius and Logic software. Music is thereafter an optional subject at GCSE, AS and A2 levels.

The academic programme is complemented and supported by the wide range of practical music making at the College, more details of which may be found here.

Specialist help is provided in preparing musicians for their studies beyond Eastbourne. Many pupils go on to read music at university or at music college, and many gain choral, organ or instrumental scholarships at Oxbridge and other institutions. A popular focus of the gap year for some students has been to work towards gaining diplomas and other qualifications at various colleges and music courses in Britain and abroad, and increasing numbers of Old Eastbournians go on to establish distinguished careers in the music industry.
