Pupils are encouraged to participate in the many performance opportunities at the College in preparation for the performing coursework assessment which takes place in the Michaelmas term of Year 11. One performance as a soloist is required for the assessment, together with another as a member of a small ensemble. Marks are available for the accuracy of the performance together with the pupil's expressive and interpretative skills.
Composition has for many years been a particular strength of the department with pupils achieving impressive results and having many opportunities to have their work performed at school events, providing an important link between the theory and practice of music. The course commences with tuition on specific compositional techniques before the pupils begin their coursework.
A CD, Conceptions, featuring music composed during the 2010-2011 academic year is available from the department office.
