Music at AS and A2

Music at AS and A2 offers pathways both for traditional musicians with a variety of interests and also for those with an enthusiasm for music technology to gain a qualification that is recognised by all universities and music colleges.

Each year-group of sixth form classes typically consists of a set of up to 6 or 8 pupils. The AQA syllabus is followed which,  as well as catering for pupils interested in performing and composing in a wide range of styles, uniquely allows pupils with a special interest in Music Technology to follow a pathway employing recording, sequencing and other ICT skills towards gaining the Music A-level. The Edexcel Music Technology syllabus is taught either in conjunction with, or as an alternative to, the Music qualification.

The analytical skills gained at GCSE are developed through the study of set works and special areas of study which are examined in June of each year. The performance coursework consists of a portfolio of recorded solo or ensemble performances compiled during the year whilst technology specialists may offer a portfolio of live and studio recordings or examples of sequenced music. The composition element offers pupils the opportunity to study a wide range of traditional and contemporary techniques, including arranging, free composition and compositional techniques. This component is undertaken under supervised conditions during the Lent and Summer terms.

The choice of pathways and papers enables pupils to play to their strengths and interests and to prepare for further study at either university or music college.
