All pupils in Year 9 attend one period of music per week. The course aims to develop the skills required by those wishing to continue to GCSE whilst also providing a varied and stimulating curriculum for all. The syllabus covers a wide range of music through a programme of listening and analysis lessons and incorporates opportunities to compose using music technology. Pupils are usually taught in small groups of about 10. There are also opportunities for instrumentalists and singers to perform in year-group events as well as in the context of the wider performance programme in the school.
In the Michaelmas Term a programme of study focussing on the use of music in the media is taught. Pupils examine how music is used in film, television, radio and advertising and think about the ways in which music can convey ideas, moods and images. In the music technology department, pupils collect and manipulate sounds to make an electronic "sonic postcard", edited using Logic software.
