“Alas for those who never sing, but die with all their music in them!”

Performance

Performance is an important part of the academic courses in music, and all pupils have the opportunity to play as soloists or as members of a wide range of ensembles.

Performance coursework accounts for 25% of the subject weighting at GCSE, and pupils are expected to play both solo works and in an ensemble. Training and advice is provided by both the instrumental and academic staff and the recordings are made towards the beginning of Year 11.

At A level  there is a variety of performance options which include solo and ensemble performance and the opportunity to use music technology.

Pupils benefit from using the impressive recording and performance spaces in the Birley Centre.

Outside the academic curriculum there are many opportunities for players and singers of all standards to get involved in a wide variety of activities. More details may be found in the co-curricular music pages.
