Medical Centre

The medical centre occupies its own building on the College site behind the dining hall and is for the use of all pupils, both day and boarding.  Medical cover is available day and night for boarders, and for day pupils during the school day as necessary.
How to contact the medical centre

The ground floor accommodates the consulting and treatments rooms (including physiotherapy) and on the first floor is a five-bedded in-patient room.

It is the aim of the medical centre staff to provide a friendly, efficient and professional service to all pupils and staff who need the services of the centre.

Dr Robert Wicks and Dr Carolyn Shepherd share responsibility as medical officers for Eastbourne College and they hold four surgeries each week that the school is in session. The pupils are registered with the medical officers on an NHS basis.

Communication and medical forms

Parents and guardians are welcome to contact the medical centre at any time concerning the health and welfare of a pupil. The medical and nursing staff will liaise closely with parents in the event of their son or daughter's health causing concern. Parents are welcome at any consultation with the medical officers. Parents are requested to let the medical centre know, either directly or via the Housemaster or Housemistress, if there are going to be life-changing events taking place, so that the pupil can be given extra support during this time.

When new pupils join the College

All parents, day and boarding, are asked to complete the following forms and return them before the beginning of the term in which the pupil enters the College:

Flu immunisation form (pdf, 32kB)
Medical information and consent forms for boarders and for day pupils (pdf, 30kB)
Travel form (pdf, 38kB)
This is only needed if travelling to a destination requiring vaccinations during the next half term or holiday.

Charges

All medical and nursing care is carried out under the NHS and there are therefore no charges for medication, dressings, and vaccinations (except for yellow fever, rabies and malaria tablets).
Individual referrals made to the College physiotherapist, counsellor or to consultants on a private basis will be charged to the pupil's account unless the pupil has private insurance. Referrals via the NHS will incur no charge.

Medical examinations for new pupils

All new pupils (if the parents have indicated their consent on the Medical Questionnaire form) will undergo medical screening. Boarders will have hearing, sight and colour blindness tests, urinalysis, blood pressure, height and weight measurements carried out by the nursing staff. Any results which raise concerns will be re-tested later in the term, and the medical officer and parents informed if necessary. The pupil will then have an appointment to see the medical officer, who will carry out a physical examination and discuss any medical concerns. The nursing staff will be present during this informal and brief appointment. Parents are very welcome to attend these medical sessions and should indicate this wish on the medical questionnaire form. In any event, the medical officer will write to the parents following the medical. Day pupils will have hearing, sight and colour blindness tests, urinalysis, blood pressure, and height and weight measurements carried out by the nursing staff. Any results which raise concerns will be re-tested later in the term, and the parents will be informed if it is appropriate for further action to be taken.
