Over 175 pupils take part each year, serving local citizens and schools. The benefits are mutual for all concerned: the partner organisations appreciate the time and expertise offered and those participating have their horizons broadened (the very essence of education – citizenship and service) and have the satisfaction of serving others.
Examples of initiatives are:
- helping with reading at local primary schools, eg Pashley Down Infant School, St Bede's and St Andrew’s School;
- assisting in charity shops;
- helping the Shopmobility team maintain the wheelchairs in the local shopping centre (the Arndale Centre, Eastbourne);
- producing artwork for a local residential home for the physically disabled (the Chaseley Trust);
- teaching local residents to send emails and surf the internet (Age Concern Silver Surfers).
- recycling initiatives;
- running a Monday Club to which local elderly residents come for bingo, mind-bending quizzes, entertainment and a chat over a cup of tea;
- visiting and chatting with residents in care homes for the elderly and disabled, eg Queen Alexandra Cottage Homes , Eastbourne Grange and Chaseley Trust residents;
- IT training for the general public in Eastbourne Library.
