The dedication of the plaque at Ypres The unveiling of the plaque at Spencer Court

Recent embellishments

Recent embellishments paid for by the Arnold Embellishers are described below.

Recent embellishments
It is impossible to walk for more than a few yards within the school without coming across an embellishment. These have ranged from the provision of an OE flag (£40) to substantial improvements to the Memorial Hall including the erection of bronze panels to commemorate the OE dead of World War II at a cost of £16,000.

'Frederick Minchin - Maverick Airman'
The Embellishers have recently published College archivist Michael Partridge's biography of Old Eastbournian Frederick Minchin, who, with his CBE, DSO, MC and Bar and three mentions, is the College's most decorated First World War serviceman after Lionel Rees VC. He afterwards became one of the pioneering civil airline pilots and died in 1927 in a valiant effort to become the first to fly the Atlantic from east to west. If you would like to buy a copy of this fully illustrated hardback book it is available to OEs and the College community at the special price of £10 (normal price £12), please click here for the order form.

Chapel Yard
Eight olive trees in planters were installed in the Chapel Yard in January 2008.

'Nobody's Business'
The Embellishers have published Nobody's Business, the 300-page illustrated memoirs of Gordon Carey OE, Headmaster 1929-38, which is available to purchase for just £10 plus p&p. Carey is pictured as a young Cambridge Blue at the bottom of this page, centre.

Eastbourne College in the Second World War
In December 2010 the Embellishers published this book, an anthology of writings about the College’s life and survival in the Second World War. Extensively illustrated with never before published photos of staff, boys and events from those momentous days, most of which have been captioned with the aid of Radley-era OEs, this 80 page A4 book is a bargain at just £5, or £6 including UK postage. Spencer Court
To commemorate the 140th anniversary of the College’s foundation, at 11am on 22 September 2007, OE Reunion Day, the Embellishers placed a plaque on the boundary wall of Spencer Court, the College’s original 1867 home.  This was unveiled by OE Embellisher John Elliott in a ceremony attended by the Town Mayor and hosted by Chairman of Governors, Sir Ian Forbes. Old Wish Road lamp standards
During September 2007 three modern street lamps in Old Wish Road were replaced by original Victorian cast iron columns and surmounted by replica Victorian lamps (see picture bottom right). This project, which the Embellishers funded to the tune of £6,000, has been led by OE Embellisher Richard Crook.

Ypres First World War Memorial
On Thursday 27 September 2007 at 2.30pm a plaque in St George’s Memorial Church at Ypres was dedicated to the memory of the 167 OEs who gave their lives in the Great War.  A party from the College, led by Chaplain Chris Macdonald, travelled from Eastbourne and was met by descendants of one of the young men who gave their lives in this war.

The Wettern Prize
Chris Cheng's award-winning design for an avant garde mural (illustrated below, bottom left) for the 'Crystal Palace' arcade was installed in 2011 at a cost of £6,077.

Current projects
Among current projects is the refurbishment of the Dell Theatre, first created by the Embellishers in 1978, and an on-line visitors' guide.
