About Foundation and Development

An Eastbourne College education offers special opportunities and transforms lives.  The Eastbourne College Foundation was formed in September 2002 and has recently evolved into the Foundation and Development Office. Its objectives are to raise funds:

    1. To assist and enable boys and girls who would not otherwise be able to join the College to come here on bursaries and scholarships. The College is always looking to broaden its intake of pupils who will make a real contribution to the school.
    2. To support and enable the College to develop and provide pupils with the best possible facilities.

Since its formation in 2002 the Foundation has raised over £550,000 in its ongoing campaign to provide bursaries for those in need of fee support and to extend scholarship opportunities for the very talented.  In addition a significant sum has been pledged in legacies by the members of its Devonshire Society. We are most grateful to all supporters of the Foundation and the College. A strong Foundation helps to underpin and strengthen the School.

Why do we need your support?

Eastbourne College exists only because of the generosity of generations of OEs, parents and friends of the College. Unlike many other similar schools, no endowment underpinned our foundation back in 1867 although we have much to be grateful for to Dr Hayman and the 7th Duke of Devonshire for their initial vision and generosity.

The history of the school tells us that, for our first hundred years and with evacuation to Radley during the war, survival was very much the name of the game. Brick by brick the school has been built through benefaction and Big School (twice), the Memorial Block, the Rule Centre, Powell, Craig, Nugent, the Memorial Ground, the Science School and Design and Technology to name just a few, are as a result of the generous benefaction of our supporters.

The relatively recent formation of the Devonshire Society in 2002 means that, through the generosity of its members, a substantial foundation will be established which will enable the College to prosper in the future and stand shoulder to shoulder with the best schools in the country.

The College is indebted to its benefactors over the last 141 years who have enabled the school to survive and now prosper in a way in which the 7th Duke and Dr Hayman, would have been proud!

The College is believed by some to be a wealthy school. The fact is that without the generosity of Old Eastbournians, parents, staff, charitable foundations and others connected with the school, the College would not have survived to become one of the region’s best schools. Today, the School still needs your support.

The College never loses sight of its past although it has to move with the times. The ethos remains the same. The school is thriving under strong leadership, sound financial management and a dedicated teaching staff who provide pupils with an outstanding all-round education. Rest assured, continuing and improving standards in education is a worthy cause.
