Top student Hamish Auld attracted a great deal of interest in the local and national press with an outstanding clean sweep of 14A* grades. His extraordinary achievement equalled the record for the best set of GCSE results in Sussex set in 2005 by fellow Eastbourne College student Ibiye Adoki who went on to achieve four A grades in her A-levels this summer.
Headmaster Simon Davies was delighted with all the students' success and had the following comment to make: "Hamish's results and those of his friends are a reflection of ability and hard work as well as the efforts of the teaching staff. What makes me even more pleased about Hamish's success is that he has achieved it whilst also enjoying all aspects of College life including A team hockey, cricket and rugby, and playing the euphonium. It is important to realise that we live in a world that can judge schools and individuals solely by exam statistics to the exclusion of the many other activities and experiences that contribute to the development of the rounded person. Hamish's success shows that it is possible to achieve outstanding results as part of, rather than instead of, an all-round education. He is a very talented young man and we are delighted for him."
Others who achieved outstanding results in the yeargroup were Iona Maxwell, whose 13 A* grades matched her sister’s record last year; Christopher Morgan (11A*/3A); Alice Lacey (11A*/2A);Alex Kazamia (10A*/3A) and Edward Hickman Casey (10A*/2A), while Nina McIntyre gained a remarkable set of 15 GCSEs, all at A* or A.
Forty-one younger pupils took GCSEs early, in Modern Languages, Maths and Latin, gaining 58 A and A* grades between them and setting themselves up to challenge for top spot next year.
This year saw College students taking the IGCSE examination in Maths for the first time, rather than the normal GCSE, and Head of Maths, James Wooldridge, pronounced himself very happy with the results achieved in this new, more rigorous examination.
