This year the College has withdrawn from newspaper league tables on the grounds that they have outlived their usefulness, are unreliable and have little, if any, worth. In common with a growing number of leading schools, the College hopes that those who wish to analyse the academic achievements of schools will look beyond the headline figure to what that means in terms of the development of individual children against their own underlying ability. A full explanation of the College’s position may be found in a letter from the Headmaster to all parents located at http://portal.eastbourne-college.co.uk/News/HMLetters/Pages/July2008.aspx
Nevertheless, the College wants to be totally transparent about the achievements of all those who have taken public exams.
At Eastbourne College today, 150 pupils are celebrating excellent GCSE results. The 116 Year 11 pupils scored 64% A or A*, with 65% of the year notching up five or more As or A*s. This is the fifth consecutive year in which more than 60% of grades have been awarded A or A*.
Superb individual performances have come from Chandu Wickramarachchi (13A*/1A) and Nicholas Cereceda, Susannah Jones and James Wicks(12A*/1A). Close behind them were James Barbour (12 A*), Heather Holland and Emma Rowe (11A*/1A) and Tom Hutchinson and Anmol Pandey (11A*).
Congratulations go also to Felix Keeling (10A*/2A), Lucy Barrie (9A*/2A), Matthew Robinson (8A*/5A), Tom Caffyn (8A*/4A), Michael Gibbs (8A*/3A/1B), Jack Shepherd (8A*/2A), Imran Iqbal (7A*/6A), Libby Allan (7 A*/5A), James Carragher and Matthew Chin (7A*/4A), Vicky Groves (6A*/5A/2B), Sophie Williams (6A*/4A/1B), Arthur Wolstenholme (6A*/4A/1C), Jessica Adams and Juliette Braithwaite (6A*/ 4A).
GCSEs in maths, modern languages and Latin were taken early by some Year 9 and 10 pupils. Of the 68 exams taken, an impressive 99% were awarded A or A*.
Headmaster Simon Davies commented: ‘These figures are certainly eye-catching but more important in a school such as Eastbourne, which is selective but not highly selective, is how pupils have performed in terms of their underlying ability. I am delighted that in partnership with dedicated staff the very able have excelled themselves and that those of other abilities have achieved some remarkable outcomes, too. I congratulate them on their success and thank all who have helped them achieve so impressively for their unstinting efforts.’
