Excellent GCSE results

Pupils and staff at Eastbourne College are celebrating excellent GCSE results. The 119 Year 11 pupils scored 61% A or A*, with over seventy pupils of this year’s cohort notching up five or more As or A*s.  This is the eighth consecutive year in which more than 60% of grades have been awarded A or A* at GCSE.

Fourteen pupils achieved at least 8A*s, with top student William Hutchinson gaining an outstanding collection of 13A* and 1A grade. Close behind William are Jenni Hreben (12A*, 2A), Patrick Davies (11 A*, 4A), Edward Lewis (11A*, 3A), Henry Miller (11 A*, 1A, 2B), Alexander Barbour (10A*, 2A), Rebekah Peat (10A*, 1A), Phoebe Alexander (9A*, 3A), Gladys Lui (9A*, 2B), Lucy Wicks (8A*, 3A), and Rachel Brooks (8A*,3A, 1B). Of the 41 GCSEs taken a year early by 34 Year 10 pupils, 31 were awarded an A* grade.

Headmaster Simon Davies is justly proud of the achievements of pupils overall: ‘I am delighted that the College is celebrating yet again a superb set of results and I offer my congratulations to all those – pupils and teachers – whose hard work and dedication have made these results possible. It is often the case (as it is this year) that the headline figure obscures the fact that the whole year group has performed strongly against its underlying ability. It is precisely because of this that league tables are so misleading, and this is why Eastbourne College continues not to take part in them.’
