"cricket thrives on the College's seven pitches and extensive outdoor net surfaces"

Cricket

Eastbourne enjoys more hours of sunshine than anywhere else in the country and the town and the school take advantage of this fact. Cricket thrives on the College's seven pitches and extensive outdoor net surfaces. College Field, adjacent to the main school, is a high-quality ground with atmosphere and character. The second pitch, at St Cyprian's (Memorial), has in the past been used to host county 2nd Xl matches and touring sides.

Coaches A E James of Sussex (1969–90), John Shepherd, the Kent and West Indies all-rounder (1991–97) and Jamie Hall of Sussex (1998) have been followed in their excellent work by Namibian Test players Deon Kotze, Danie Keulder and J-B Burger in recent years. The master-in-charge of cricket is former Kent CCC batsman Matt Banes and the current cricket professional (and overall Sports Co-ordinator) is former captain of Zimbabwe, Andy Waller.

Fixtures are played against local Sussex schools as well as King's Canterbury and Tonbridge from Kent and Cranleigh and St John's Leatherhead from Surrey. Nine school sides play each week. The 1st Xl will host touring sides from Australia and South Africa in 2008 as well as joining the Dulwich Festival at the start of July and enjoying the beautiful surroundings of Arundel Castle for a game against the Sussex Martlers on 1 May.

Major recent tours include those to Barbados (1991, 1996, 2000), New Zealand (1988) and Australia in 2001 and 2004, when both the the 1st and 2nd Xl remained undefeated. Excellent coaches and enthusiastic staff make cricket an integral part of the summer term.
