Cross Country

Cross Country is a growing element of the sports programme at Eastbourne College, and one at which we increasingly excel.

It is offered as a full-time sports choice for all Year 11s and above in Michaelmas and Lent terms, and can be negotiated for younger students.

The emphasis is on enjoyment for those who simply wish to improve their fitness, and excellence for those who wish to compete, with a full season of races.

Biathlon and triathlon are managed as part of our cross country department.

Members of the Eastbourne College Cross-Country team produced some outstanding performances during Athletics Week. This 4-day event, during the final week of Lent term, marks the beginning of the College’s athletics season. It was certainly a positive start for many of the cross-country runners.

All 3 of the new school records in boys’ individual events were in long distance running. In the Senior Boys 800m, the previous record of 2.09 had stood since 1992. Ed Hickman-Casey, out-going College cross-country captain, smashed this by 8 seconds, clocking an out-standing time of 2.00.7. Monty Wilson and Sam Lowden also set records for their age-groups, in the 800m and 3000m respectively. Ed Hickman-Casey was jointly awarded the Senior Boys’ Victor Ludorum for his performances, and Jamie Bradley, another cross-country team member, was awarded the Junior Boys' Victor Ludorum for his efforts over the shorter distances.

There were also a crop of new records in the girls’ long distance running events. Chloe Cook set a new 1500m record in her age-group. Lilly Freeman, who won the Knole Run earlier this season and led the Eastbourne College girls’ cross-country team to victory in the Ardingly Relays, set records over both 1500m and 800m. She was awarded the Girls’ Junior Victrix Ludorum in recognition of her achievements.

Congratulations to all of the cross-country runners for their performances this term, and best of luck next term on the athletics track.
