Tennis

As a town Eastbourne has a strong reputation for tennis with the annual international tournament and the annual county tournament. As a school Eastbourne College has a similarly strong reputation. With 24 astro tennis courts and a number of  hard courts at the College, it is well placed to provide a quality learning environment to players of all standards. The master in charge of tennis is Mark Wilders who directs a team of professional and teacher coaches. The lead coach is Francis Mackie, the number 1 player in the Great Britain at the over 40's level and who regularly represents his country.

Tennis is a girls' major sport and a boys' minor sport. The Summer Term is the key term for both performance and recreational players but the College views the sports as a year round activity with group and individual coaching continuing on the Michaelmas and Lent terms. Coaching is careful planned and delivered to enable students to develop their full potential. Each student is assessed individually and is set performance targets which are reviewed at regualr intervals.

Competetive fixtures are a key element of tennis players experience. The summer term provides a full fixture programme against schools in the area as well as local clubs and visiting foreign teams. Performance players maintain match sharpness by playing the Sussex winter league against local tennis clubs. Competetive play is for the many, not the few -  we field 1st, 2nd, 3rd, U16A, U16B, U15A, U15B, U14A and U14B teams.. Students also play various knock-out cups - the Aberdare Cup for seniors girls and the Glanville Cup for senior boys and the LTA year 10 and under cup for the juniors. Other competetive opportunites include Girls and Boys Junior and Senior  Singles competitions and the house double competitions for girls and boys.

Students have opportunities to enjoy tennis by visiting professional tournaments including Wimbledon, Eastbourne and the ATP Masters.

Performance players have an opportunity to attend an annual tennis camp in Majorca - an exciting and intensive coaching opportunity.
