“Loud organs his glory forth tell in deep tone ...”

Organs

The College has two pipe organs in contrasting styles. The Chapel Organ incorporates a body of late nineteenth century pipework enhanced by more recent additions, whilst the Music School Organ is voiced in a classical style.

The Chapel Organ

The Chapel Organ has its origins in an instrument by Forster and Andrews donated to the school in 1889 by the Headmaster, the Rev Charles Crowden, to replace a smaller organ of 1885 by Walker. It was enlarged by Bevington in 1896 and rebuilt by JW Walker in 1950. More recent additions by Wood Brown have seen the specification enhanced to enable the performance of a wider range of repertoire and the installation of a digital action.

The Music School Organ

The Music School Organ was built as a chamber organ by Gerald Sweatman in 1989 incorporating pipework voiced by Denis Thurlow. It was donated to the College and installed in the Concert Room in 1998. Plans are in progress to enlarge the instrument and provide it with new casework when it becomes the focal point of the new concert hall in the forthcoming Birley Centre.
