“it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing”

Swing Band

The Swing Band provides an opportunity for students to explore the world of jazz through an eclectic repertoire ranging from early trad jazz classics through to contemporary works. With its busy schedule it enables its members to experience a wide variety of performance contexts both in and outside the College.

The band numbers some fourteen players drawn from all year groups together with some enthusiastic players from the Senior Common Room. All its arrangements are produced in-house by its director, David Force, and are largely chosen by the band members themselves.

The band has a busy concert diary. In addition to appearing in a variety of contexts within the College, the band has access to an impressive mobile PA set-up which allows performances at outdoor venues, including Eastbourne’s magnificent Victorian seafront bandstand.

The band operates a popular outreach programme to local schools in which members talk about and demonstrate their instruments in the context of a concert featuring a variety of jazz styles, and each year the band hosts a Jazz Day for prep schools in which young musicians participate in an intensive day of music and activities culminating in a joint concert.

The band recorded its first demo CD in May 2008 - plaese contact the music department if you would like a copy.
