Royal Opera House Design Challenge Finalists
Clem Clapp (Year 10) and Sophie Bullock (Year 12) have qualified for the finals of the Royal Opera House Design Challenge.
They designed and made a hat for Musetta and shirt for Poet Rodolfo, characters from Giacomo Puccini’s La bohème. This opera is set in Paris and centred around a group of young bohemians. The story, coupled with Puccini’s memorable music and the central tragic love story, make La bohème one of the best-loved of all operas.

- A white fabric embroidered with black thread outlines of buildings, windows, and rooftops evokes a cityscape. Some buildings are shaded in blue, while loose, sketch-like lines rise upward, forming abstract shapes and the word “Opera”.
- A white, long-sleeved button-up shirt displayed on a mannequin, featuring large buttons, light blue stains, and handwritten words in black ink across the sleeves and right side—evoking the drama of an opera costume.
- A black and red vintage cloche hat, perfect for the opera, decorated with feathers, red fringe trim, gold embroidery, and a red fabric flower, displayed on a white mannequin head against a plain background.
