Tennis success continues

Following their recent fine win in the U15 County Sussex Shield event, the Eastbourne College girls team (Eliza Houchin, Valentina Khalturina (Cpt), Izzy McIntosh and Annie Wilson) completed an impressive victory in the LTA U15 National Schools’ league to win their play-off final against Hurstpierpoint College 5–1 and finish as Sussex Champions. This is the first time that the College has won this National LTA event.

It was a hard fought victory against a determined team with a good county player at number one.  However, she was no match for the eastbourne College national standard number one, Valentina, who beat her easily 6–0 with a dominating performance. Whilst this encounter was taking place Annie and Eliza were engaged in tight single matches. Eliza had a slow start but fought back, before losing 4–6. Meanwhile, Annie let a 5–2 lead slip as her opponent levelled at 5–5 but managed to hold her nerve to complete a 7–5 victory to leave the team 2–1 up.  Izzy had an excellent start in her singles match, winning the key points in each game to go 5–0 up and finish with a win 6–2.

3–1 up after the singles and the girls stepped up the pace to win their doubles easily, Valentina and Annie winning 6-0 and Izzy and Eliza winning 6–1.

The team goes on to compete in the Independent Schools’ Tennis Championships at Eton in the first days of the summer holiday and will continue to train hard in the last week of term.
