World-class writers

On Wednesday 16 October, the English Department, in conjunction with the Birley Centre welcomed two world-class writers to the College. Over lunch, 30 students and teachers packed into the Long Room to listen to acclaimed Man Booker shortlisted novelist Stephen Kelman, author of Pigeon English. Stephen spoke about the challenges in his own life that led to the writing of his debut novel and in particular the creative process. He was happy to answer questions on characterisation and future projects.

In the evening, the Jennifer Winn Auditorium of the Birley Centre was full to capacity for a recital by Guyanese poet John Agard who delighted the audience with moving and humorous recitals of his own poems. Furthermore, students from the College as well as a number of local schools, along with members of the public, were introduced to the ocarina, a strange and haunting instrument from South America.
