An all-inclusive programme of sport is an integral part of life at Eastbourne College. We strive for excellence – sport at the highest level – but believe in participation and offer opportunities for everyone to represent the College either as elite players or as enthusiastic members of other teams. We nurture our own sportsmen and women throughout their time at the College and allow strong teams to grow up and develop together.

We endeavour to create a good balance between performance and participation and, above all, we encourage our pupils to enjoy their sport and give of their best at whatever level they play. In recent years the College has achieved remarkable success. Its teams have impressed on the regional and national circuit and it has produced international sportsmen and women.

For a brief overview of sport at the College please view this video.

Two major team sports are played every term: In the Michaelmas term boys play rugby and girls play hockey; in the Lent term boys play hockey and girls play netball; and in the summer term boys play cricket, tennis or athletics and girls play tennis or athletics. We also offer a broad selection of other sporting opportunities, the choice of which increases as pupils progress through the school. These sports run alongside the College's major sports programme and include basketball, cross country, show jumping, fencing, fives, football, golf, rounders, rowing, sailing and swimming. Large numbers of pupils represent the College at these sports throughout the year.

Our sports facilities are excellent and include two top class Astroturf pitches and an all-weather practice Astroturf for hockey; four cricket grounds with grass wickets prepared by a team of ground staff; eight all-weather cricket nets; 28 tennis courts on three surfaces including professional quality grass courts at Devonshire LTC; four netball courts; three Rugby Fives courts and seven rugby pitches. A fitness suite provides valuable training opportunities for all pupils, be they elite sportsmen and women undertaking their weekly conditioning programme or novices hoping to improve their fitness.  The quality of the sports facilities is reflected in the fact that the College was chosen as a Team Base for the Rugby World Cup in September 2015, hosting South Africa.

The College is fortunate in having an outstanding and dedicated team of coaching staff across all sports, many of whom have themselves achieved national and international recognition. The sports staff are supported by a strong infrastructure and an outstanding team of ground staff: the College’s head groundsman was recently recognised by the National Institute of Groundsmanship when he was named runner-up (behind the Manchester United ground staff team)  for the best maintained artificial pitch in the country.

Sport at Eastbourne College centres around opportunity, participation, support, enjoyment and success – and everyone within the College community has their role to play in achieving these goals.
