Creative Arts virtual event shines light on pupil talent
The Music Department hosted three virtual events this term, the most diverse of which was the inaugural Creative Arts Beacon Event (CAB1). This new event was so popular it sparked a College community-led movement for its continuation.
Billed as an open-mic-style collaboration of creative arts talent, pupils were invited to show and tell their latest creative work to the College community via Teams. Audience members also had the opportunity to quiz the pupils and congratulate them. Owing to lockdown restrictions, all of the work had been produced at home using pupils’ own resources.
Director of Music, Dan Jordan, pulled the event together and was overwhelmed by the volume of work submitted. Pupils passionate about art, art textiles, dance, drama, music, photography, poetry and more besides, jumped at the opportunity.
Fourteen pupils submitted work, ranging from extraordinary pieces of art and clever time-lapse videos, to original poetry and musical performances. The variety of creative talent was an aesthetic to behold, a feast for the senses. It was clear that pupils had taken inspiration from current affairs, the Black Lives Matter movement, classical music, artists like Pablo Picasso and Edvard Munch, while others displayed their Royal Opera House Design Challenge entry pieces centred on the opera Carmen by Georges Bizet.
A second event is planned for the first half of the summer term owing to its popularity. It is likely the momentum will continue now, with the event shoehorned into an already busy calendar of creative and performing arts opportunities for pupils.
